In their column, sixth formers and Deputy Head Boy and Girl Jake Saunders and Tara Costello write about life, love and whatever has grabbed their interest around school this half term.

October was Black History Month here at Welling School. It has been a very interesting month; each week I have learnt something new about an amazing black person in history.

I was quite disappointed to see no focal point on black musicians. I was really shocked that not one single person (apart from the odd teacher) had heard of the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Muddy Waters! It is people like that we have to thank and maybe blame for the amount of different music we have today. The vast contributions made by a single group of people are just amazing. The majority of the music we all listen to today stems from early jazz, western music, and ethic folk music.

Muddy Water’s influence on artists over the years has been tremendous – ranging from a variety of music genres.

- He helped Chuck Berry get his record contract. (Chuck Berry being the PIONEER of rock ‘n’ roll). AC/DC and John Lennon credit Berry as a big influence.
- The Rolling Stones named themselves after Muddy’s song “Rollin’ Stone”. Jimi Hendrix also covered this. Eric Clapton was a huge fan of Muddy Water’s growing up, and this effectively influenced his successful musical career.
- Bob Dylan has covered him, and one of Led Zeppelin’s biggest hits is lyrically based on one of his songs.

Muddy Waters being an American Blues singer, influenced tons of 80’s rock ‘n’ roll bands. The 80s era has influenced many of today’s artists too.
The other contribution made to the today’s culture, by black people, through music, would be breaking the walls of division!

When Mr Fairnie left his position as head of 6thform at the end of the last school term, as a year group we were left feeling somewhat apprehensive. Who was gonna replace good ol’ Fairnie? Would his replacement come in and shake up the way that we’ve been enjoying school for the past year or so? And most importantly, would the new head of 6th be agreeable and fun? Or would the new dragon swoop in and pick out all of our eyes one by one?

Since joining Welling School in September, Ms Beer has been working to try and improve the 6thform as a whole. We’ve now got Head boy, Head girl, deputies, and our army of year 12 and 13 prefects at our disposal. As a group we’ve been working to organize events throughout the school, the first being the student/teacher quiz night last month which was an absolute success, raising over one-hundred and fifty pounds for the 6thform fund; our stash of money that’s going to be put to use to improve our common room and study room. Also coming up is the Battle of The Bands being held on the 20th of November, organization being led by Callum Jackson and Tara Costello. A night of bands from the year group within school and participants from outside school, all organised by the 6thform alongside Ms Beer.

To come to a close, it’s easy to see that since September there has been a complete change of how the 6thform works and interacts throughout the rest of the school. Attendance is up, prefects are helping in lessons for years 7-9, tonnes of extra-curricular “days” for 6thformers have been taken place and there are many more to come. Change has been good for all of us, and throughout this year we’re going to keep up the hard work to make the 6thform an outstanding one that we’re proud to be a part of!
