School Council Update October 2009

Canteen negotiations: During the school council meeting this month we met with John, the canteen chef and manager who works for the company Scolarest that runs the canteen. We spoke about the issues that are concerning you, the students, with the result that we have got the approval of a promotion pack to be created that will give discounts and deals every week to students. We also discussed the issues of queuing and waiting times, both of which will be looked into so I’ll let you know more when I can.

Lockers! Every year council meeting and school conical meeting they are brought up. IT’S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN! Seriously guys, every year they are asked for and the simple answer is that the school has no space and has to have the showers to meet Government guidelines.

‘Bike-it’: This is a new and exciting programme coming to Welling School in January 2010. TFL (Transport For London) have given the school funding for six new bike stands to be placed in the Elsa entrance to the school. As well as this many other exciting and great opportunities are coming. And of course it gains the full support of the school council and the iSquash team, so watch this space!

Major school improvements! The school’s financial manager is trying to secure funding for a brand new unisex toilet facility what will replace the boys and girls toilets in the atrium outside Elsa Hall. It would compose built-in secure floor-to-ceiling cubicles with strong locks and a fountain-style hand washer in the middle. This would all be open and allow staff to supervise the toilets without infringing people’s privacy. This is still in the very early planning stages but we will monitor progress and keep you updated.

Jack Petchey: This month's Jack Petchey award winner was decided by the school council as Sophie Francis of 10 Beech, for campaigning at Downing St for a reduction in bus fares. Well done Sophie!

Keep your suggestions coming to School Council through your form reps; together we CAN change our school for the better!
