Diversity Rocks! cont.
The evening was hosted and organised by students and teachers from Welling School and took place on Thursday 22nd October. The evening was filled with lots of entertaining performances from both teachers and students varying from dancing and singing, with songs in different languages to poems and even a fashion show of African style to end of with.

The turnout was really good with people of all races and cultures coming together to celebrate. The event was very refreshing and everyone who was there seemed to enjoy themselves. The audience even joined in with the dancing which ended the night on a high. ‘I’d like to think that this event will become an annual one and grow bigger and better with each passing year’, said Miss Whittaker, ‘it’s been wonderful to recognise and celebrate the cultures that make our school and our country what it is.’

As the evening ended with a feast of African delicacies, Mrs Laditi (main organiser) summed up the feeling, saying we were there to ‘share the love between all of us’.

Is Welling Broke? cont.

I started with the simple question, “how is the school coping?” to which he replied, “given the current financial crisis the school is coping respectably well and this is due to careful and creative planning ahead…School funding is always a challenging area and will become worse as we ride the recession through.” He also went on to say that “departments are becoming better at managing their budgets,” but refused to tell me who is the worst for over-spending!

One way that the school is saving money and also helping the environment is by the removal of
colour printers from most classrooms. This is mainly because of the waste and misuse of them, which costs the school thousands a year. So once again, unfortunately the silly behaviour of the few has ruined the privilege of the many.

Of course, if you’re an eco warrior you will be happy! Because the new printers not only cost less but also contribute to the schools ‘green’ campaign, by saving ink and paper. Further to this, if you’re a head of department you will also be happy because you won’t have to spend a large portion of your small budget on costly colour ink.

Do you want to help the school save money?

Do you want the school to buy more useful equipment for your learning?

Well stop the surge of vandalism. This is an issue I feel very strongly about and I spoke to Mr Rigmo at length about it. With over 1500 students in this school stuff can occasionally get broken and damaged. But what is not necessary or excusable is the deliberate and childish vandalism which costs the school tens of thousands a year.

So to save the school money, STOP breaking the fire door glass, STOP putting graffiti on the school walls. It’s up to us, the students, to generally STOP the mindless and pathetic vandalism that makes not only our school look bad but also make us look bad as people. You wouldn’t do it at home so do not do it here.

Who knows, if we could save the school money on these things maybe we’ll be able to afford other things that we’d like, including the extra lunchtime supervisors needed to staff a longer lunch break.
